Crowns / Bridges
/ Dentures
Prosthodontics are called for where the teeth are broken down or missing,
causing problems in both the bite and appearance of the mouth.
The most common solutions to these problems are crown, bridge work
and/or dentures.
Restoration is usually so successful that others cannot discern the real teeth
from the restoration. Crown and bridge treatment is a long-term method of
replacing
a missing tooth or teeth.

Crowns become necessary when there is insufficient tooth structure to support a filling. Teeth that are severely broken down from decay or fracture can be fully restored to proper appearance and function with a crown restoration. Crowns cover the tooth completely, fitting just at the gumline and protecting the remaining tooth.

A Bridge is a replacement for a missing tooth that is anchored in place by the adjacent teeth. Crowns and bridges are most often made from superior materials such as precious metals (gold), semi-precious metals, porcelain, or a combination of metal fused to porcelain. Both esthetics (appearance) and function are considered when selecting the material most suitable for you. Most crowns have a tooth-colored porcelain exterior fused to a high noble metal base. The shade is customized to match your other teeth so that in your mouth a crown will look just like a natural tooth.

Dentures: If many of your teeth are missing, loose or painful, you may be past the point of saving them. The cause of these conditions is usually advanced periodontal disease. Periodontal disease causes bone loss and if not caught in time will result in the loss of one or many of the teeth. Replacing your teeth with dentures may be the best way to eliminate the infection and return your mouth to good health.

If you are missing one or more natural teeth, then you know how much this diminishes your chewing ability. What you may not realize is - that missing teeth also affect your facial structure, increasing stress on remaining teeth and often giving your cheeks a sunken appearance. Bridgework works like a series of connected crowns, replacing missing teeth by bridging the gap and using the surrounding teeth as abutments. A bridge can avert the chain-reaction of dental problems that can occur when a tooth is lost. These can include: |
|
| The tooth opposing the missing tooth can start to extrude from its socket. | ||
| The missing tooth can cause chewing problems. | ||
| Problems can develop with the TMJ (Temporomandibular Dysfunction). | ||
| It is much harder to clean the teeth that have shifted, which may cause further tooth loss through the advancement of periodontal disease. | ||
| Replacing missing teeth with bridgework can actually give you a more youthful appearance. | ||
|
Once permanently cemented in your mouth,
bridgework will look, feel and function the same as your natural teeth,
